South Sulawesi
South Sulawesi has four major ethnic groups: in the lowlands the Bugis,
Makasarese and Mandarese and in the highlands the Torajans. The first three
mainly live from agriculture and fishery. The Bugis are known as the best
seafarers and ship-builders in Indonesia.
Paotere, the old seaport of
Makassar, the beautiful wooden Buginese pinisi boats are still loaded by hand.
Besides as cargo-boats they are being used for fishery and for the transportation of passengers to other islands of the archipelago. The pinisi is the symbol of the province South Sulawesi.
The Toraja highlands are situated at the northern part of this province and
are 600 meters above sealevel. The main incomes of the Toraja people are from agriculture and plantation. The Toraja area with its scenic beauty is
well known for its unique deathculture, which attract many tourists from
all over the world.

Central Sulawesi
Different ethnic groups of which the Pamona and the Kaili clans are most
known inhabit this province. The Pamona live around Lake Poso and the Kaili
mainly in the highlands and in the area around the capital Palu.
Some attractions of this province are the nature reserve, the splendid Lake
Poso, waterfalls and the many small islands with their white sandy beaches.
The most beautiful place to dive and snorkel is at the Togian islands. You
may see dolphins swimming around this area.
North Sulawesi
This extremely mountainous and hilly province is the area of the Sangir,
Bolmong, Gorantalon, Minahasa and Manado. There are still many active
volcanoes. Warm water flows from these volcanoes to the many lakes such as
Lake Lahindong.
The mountain city of Tomohon gives a scenic beauty over
the volcano Lokon, lake Tondano, Japanese caves and the village Sawangan,
known for its old sarcofagen.
A lot of native fauna and flora can be found in the nature reserves of
North Sulawesi.
The Bunaken island, at north of the capital Manado, is a paradise for divers and snorkeles.
