Prayers
and Meditations on the
PRINCIPLES of LIFE

pieces of an ancient chess-game from Airyanem Vaeja (Iranvej)
Thousands of years before the Sirozah or thirty days calendar was designed by a convention of Sassanid and Egyptian priests, the Great Teacher Zar-Ardust-Ra taught us how to pray to the creator, using the week-calendar of Seven Days. As the creation started with darkness, every new day was thought to start at dusk and end at the beginning of the next nightfall. This was depicted by the arrangement of the pieces of the game of chess which was used by him to teach everything concerning the Principles of Life.

In the back row
(the lowest one in the picture above)
the symbols for the Amshaspands (
Amesha
Spyentas
)
or Archangels, who work in the spiritual plane, can be seen, while the front
row contains the Izeds (
Yazatas
)
or forces that work in the
material
plane. Read from the chessboard in this way, the first day would start on
Friday Night with The CREATOR, and continue with The Preserver
(to the left)
on Saturday Morning, while the second day (like all the consecutive days)
would start in the back row on ETERNAL LIFE
(at the right of The Creator),
to continue with the symbol before it: EARTH. Each consecutive day is then
to the right of the previous one, after the right end
(Peace)
continuing with Power on the left end of the Amshaspands on the back row. We
will notice the special position of the "King and Queen" on this chessboard
for the first day: MAN is positioned here in front of the creator,
symbolizing "The Father and I are One!", just like the ancient Iranian word
"Khoda", which was at the origin of the words God
(English)
and Gott (German)
actually means GOD as well as I: "I am
that I am !" This is the theme of the Friday Night meditation, and the
symbol of food placed in front of the Preserver indicates the habit of
fasting (no food to be eaten,
only Water is to be drunk) on the
seventh day, the Day of the Lord Ahura Mazda: Saturday.
As there was a profound knowledge of astrology already at that time, the days were not only numbered from one to seven, but also they received names of the (then known) planets. Below is a listing of the days with their planetary signification, on which you can click to go to the corresponding meditations of each evening and morning of the pre-Sassanid seven-day week. Meditating on an Archangel (Amshaspand, Amesha Spyenta) will make you dream of it, and you may be taught by it during your sleep. Meditating on an Angel (Ized, Yazata) before starting your day will give you strength and support for your task on earth. In later times, this Meditation was also used by the Essenes that lived near the Dead Sea (where their "Scriptorium" was), and in Galilea near Mount Kharmel (their place of spiritual training and studies) and in Egypt (the "Therapeuteae" or healers), as is still witnessed by their "Angel Scroll", which was found in the caves near the Dead Sea, with the other Dead Sea Scrolls.

Above here: A picture of a full game of ancient chess.
On the opposite side are the black forces of darkness, of Ahriman, which each are of a negatieve nature in relation to the positive white pieces bearing the same symbol directly opposite (at the botttom of this picture). These wooden pieces (with black and white ink/paint) were also used to impress the images into the clay tiles of the original version of the Zend Avesta, in the ancient times before the alphabetic letter system was used.
