Its involvement in the Third
Coalition against France, cost Austria its province of Tyrol and the Venetian
territories it had gained as compensation for the Austrian Netherlands.
Meanwhile the states that supported Napoleon grew in territory and status.
Bavaria and Württemberg became Kingdoms and annexed territory from Austria and
other smaller states that were done away with. Also Baden gained lots of
territory. The Electorate of Salzburg was annexed by Austria while its ruler,
already moved from Tuscany to Salzburg, was compensated with the new Grandduchy
of Würzburg.
A fourth
coalition by Russia, Prussia and Saksony would also fail to defeat Napoleon in
the next year.
