The first meeting of Camille, a divinity college professor and Petra, a circus performer, takes place at a laundrette; the second, when Petra returns Camille's clothing, which she'd deliberately switched for hers. Camille is engaged to one of her male colleagues, but slowly realizes that she's a lesbian. "Night" has pacing problems early on, but the narrative coalesces about halfway through. Audacious Petra helps Camille accept her true nature and Camille provides Petra a certain stability she's been lacking prior to their acquaintance.
