De Vliegerende Hollander, or the Kite-Flying Dutchman
in proper English, was named after the (in)famous Flying Dutchman.
Like the legendary Flying Dutchman, De Vliegerende Hollander is -
unsurprisingly - born in the
Netherlands. Their birth dates are few hundred years apart, but both
are cursed with the urge to roam the earth like wanderers (although
for the latter hopefully not until the end of times). But whereas
the Flying Dutchman roams the seven seas... De Vliegerende Hollander
roams the skies to fly his kites. He suddenly shows up at
festivals, flying strange objects he prefers to call kites and
harassing attending fliers for all kinds of forgotten equipment. So
beware, you may be his next victim!
The motto of De Vliegerende Hollander, "Rather ten kites in the
sky, than one in the hand", is a variation of a Dutch saying
(rather one bird in the hand, than ten in the sky). It indicates a
preference for word-twists but also relates a certain laziness in
the launching of kites... De Vliegerende Hollander seems to enjoy
looking at - and joking about - kites more than going through the
work of assembling and launching them!
Quite some thought was given to placing De Vliegerende Hollander's
scrapbook on the net. There's already so much virtual wasteland out
there - with photo's of long-gone festivals, photos of self-made
kite copies, photo's of self-bought kites and more of this
unoriginal waste! Originality - in the broadest sense of the word -
thus became the main selection criteria for for the virtual
scrapbook. Let De
Vliegerende Hollander know what you think of it, and enjoy the
following pages!
