CHRISTMAS MUSIC

1.

Cornet Solo:  Mid-Winter (4:14)

Written for and performed by Canadian Staff Bandsman Melody Watson.  This is an arrangement of the Christmas Carol “Mid-Winter” to the tune of Cranham.

The Little Drummer Boy (4:02)

A lyrical arrangement of this Christmas favourite.

Once in Royal David’s City (3:25)

 

A three verse arrangement of this popular carol building intensity from start to finish.

4.

March: Yuletide Celebration (3:10)

This lively march was commissioned by the Hamilton Temple Band for the 1999 “City Christmas Celebration”. The march features the tunes of “God King Wencleslas”, “Jingle Bells”, “Joy to the World” and “You’re a mean one Mr. Grinch”.    

MARCHES

1.

Botwood Centenary (2:48)

Written for the one hundredth anniversary of the Botwood Corps in Newfoundland.  This march features the choruses “With His Loving Hand to Guide” and “All Through the Years His Providence Has Led Me”.    

2.

Mississauga Spirit (3:53)

Written for the 1993 Mississauga Temple Band Festival.  This march features the chorus “It’s No Longer I that Liveth” and the Mississauga Temple Sunday School Song.    

3.

Shout the Victory (3:02)

 This march employs the songs “Bound for the Promised Land” and “When We All Get to Heaven”.   

4.

Bermuda Celebration (3:10)

Written for the Hamilton Temple Band’s 1996 tour of Bermuda.  1996 marked the one hundredth anniversary of the Salvation Army’s work in Bermuda and this march pays tribute to this milestone with the choruses “Soon and very soon” and “He’s Able”.  

5.

The Royal Banner (3:14)

 This exhilarating march highlights the universal nature of the Salvation Army by featuring the songs “Stand up for Jesus” and “Standing on the Promises”.    

6.

Strength and Honour (3:10)

An original work paying tribute to Canada’s military contributions during the 20th Century.

A “blues” arrangement of the tune “Amazing Grace” . This piece is presented in a southern gospel style and features a number of soloists.

A bright arrangement of the popular chorus “Soon and Very Soon”.

A swing arrangement of the Sunday School Song “Peter, James and John in a Sailboat” featuring a number of soloists.

Promises (3:45)

Written for the 2000 Sunrise Music Institute, this is a hard driving “funk” arrangement of the classic hymn “Standing on the Promises”

A three verse arrangement of the hymn tune “When He Cometh”.  This piece builds  from a simple opening to a triumphant finish.

A powerful arrangement of the songster piece “All for Thee”.

Fire Divine(Euphonium duet) (3:06)

 

A devotional arrangement of the tune “Burning, Burning”.

4.

Peace with Self (7:00)

 

Written as a personal testimony, this meditation is centered around the beautiful songs “All Your Anxiety” and “All there is of Me”.

 

SOLOS

 1.

Eb Horn Solo: Eyes upon Jesus (4:21)

 A devotional arrangement of the song “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”.

 

2.

Cornet Solo:  Joyful Song (8:40)

Written for Canadian Staff Bandsman Melody Watson.  This rhapsodic solo is a portrait of a Salvationist musician and features the song “Praise Him” and Bill Hime’s chorus “All that I am”.

 

3.

Bass Trombone Solo:  Vigilant (6:52)

Written for Canadian Staff Bandsman Len Ferguson.  This rhapsodic solo is based on the tune “God Sees the Little Sparrow Fall”.

 

4.

Cornet Solo: The Standard (8:00)

Written for Steef Klepke, principal cornet of the Amsterdam Staff Band for the A.S.B.’s thirty fifth anniversary celebrations in 1996.  The solo is based on the tune “Calabar” and offers technical challenges to the soloist through changing meter, range,  tongue and finger technique.  

5.

Eb Bass Solo: Czardas (5:12)

An arrangement of Monti’s exciting violin solo for Eb bass and band.  This arrangement was written for Canadian Staff Band tuba virtuoso Rob Brown.

 

6.

Percussion Capers (6:00)

Written for Amsterdam Staff Bandsman Gerard Klaucke. This comical arrangement calls upon the soloist to use a variety of non-traditional percussion instruments such as a wash board, glasses filled with water, balloons, bicycle horn etc. amidst a back drop of  “Also  Sprach Zarathustra”, “Keep in step all the time”, “What a friend we have in Jesus”,  “On we march with the blood and the fire” and  “The 1812 Overture”.

Euphonium Solo: Fewster

A devotional arrangement of the well loved tune “Fewster”.

A festive three verse arrangement of the church hymn “C.W.M. Rhonnda”.

A thrilling fanfare based on  the hymn “Coronation”.

BAND VOCALS

 1.

Salvation Hoe-Down (2:20)

A light hearted male chorus arrangement of the Sunday School chorus “The devil and me we disagree” set in country western style. The accompaniment is for brass sextet and percussion. Interludes include “How the West was Won”, “Dueling Banjoes” and “Camptown Races”

 All small ensemble items are scored for four parts with an optional fifth part and percussion. The part assignments are as follows:

A simple arrangement of the chorus “He’s Able”.  Written for the 1994 Metro Toronto Senior Music Camp.

The Lord’s Army (easy) (1:44)

A simple arrangement of the Sunday School chorus “I’m Too Young to March in the Infantry”. Written for the 1994 Metro Toronto Senior Music Camp.

We Shall Win! (med./difficult) (2:10)

The award winning composition for the 1994 Glenn Gould Composition Contest sponsored by The Canada and Bermuda Territory of the Salvation Army.  This is a lively arrangement of the song “We Shall Win”.

 

5.

March: Rejoice! (Med.) (2:27)

Written for the 1995 Metro Toronto Senior Music Camp. This rousing march features the popular chorus “Rejoice in the Lord Always”.

 

6.

The Saints (beginner) (2:06)

Written for the 1996 Metro Toronto Junior Music Camp. This arrangement of “When the Saints Go Marching In” is ideally suited for the beginning band.  

7.

March: Stand Up for Jesus (Med) (2:41)

 

Written  in 1996 for Holland’s National Music Camp. This lively march is centered around the tune “Stand Up for Jesus”.

Written in 1999 for Metro Toronto Junior Music Camp and featuring well known Classical melodies such as “Joyful, Joyful”, “New World Symphony”, “Surprise Symphony” and “The Can, Can”.

A Swing arrangement of “Frosty the Snow Man”.

Spiritual Triptych (beginner) (4:00)

A three part suite written in 2000 for Metro Toronto Junior Music Camp and featuring the Negro Spirituals “Michael Row the Boat Ashore”, “Kum Buy Ya” and “Swing Low”.
