Richard van der Spek was born
in The Hague, Netherlands, in 1946. He began painting with oils at the
age of eight, and continued his art studies at the Royal Academy of Art,
graduating with honours in 1968.
His figurative paintings can
be divided into three groups: portraits, everyday life/ modern society
and musical and literary themes. He has also made numerous murals.
Since his first and very controversial
exhibition in 1972, which attracted much attention from the press, Richard
van der Spek has exhibited regularly in the Netherlands and abroad. Among
the many museums and galleries to feature his solo-exhibitions are the
Municipal Museum of The Hague, Pulchri Studio, the Haagse Kunstkring and
the Museum of Fine Arts in Oostende (Belgium).
Critics consider van der Spek "an artist who can rely on a remarkable
technical ability and a piercing vision". Others have called him
"the Heronymus Bosch of our time".
Richard van der Spek's paintings
are in the permanent collections of the Municipal Museum of The Hague,
the Artotheek and the Museum of Fine Arts (Oostende), and in private collections
in the Netherlands, France, Greece, Canada, Curaçao and the U.S.A.
Reproductions of his paintings
have been published in various books and journals, including "Het
Openbaar Kunstbezit".
