20. Copper figure of Shou

Shou Hsing, in Chinese mythology one of the three stellar gods known collectively as Fu-Shou-Lu, is always easily recognizable. Revered as the god of longevity, he is depicted as a venerable old man with a bald head and a very high forehead.

Normally Shou is holding a staff in his right hand, wich is missing in this image. In his left hand he holds a peach, symbol of health and longevity.

Fu, Lu and Shou are very popular among the overseas Chinese. In every Chinese restaurant or takeaway in Europe one can find one or all three of these deities.

This image of Shou is of Chinese-Javanese origin.

Style and character indicate that it is 70-80 years old.
