On both sides of the gateway of every Shiva-temple stand the Dvarapala's: Mahakala and Nandishvara. They are the gate-watchers and both a manifestation of Shiva himself. Their demon like appearance, with bulging eyes and fangs, must frighten those who do not belong in the Shiva temple.
