10. Bronze figure of Vishnu or Rama

Of the three important Gods in Hinduïsm, Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu, the so called Trimuti, Vishnu is the keeper of the Universe. Possibly this bronze is an image of Vishnu, but it could also be Rama, the God-hero of the Ramayana, one of the many reïncarnations (Avatara) of Vishnu.

Seated on a cushion on a shaped throne, legs in Lalita-Asana.

Possibly the right hand is in Varada-Mudra, the gesture of giving favours, but it is hard to tell something about this image with 100 percent certainty, except for the age: over 50 years. Small holes in a pattern indicate that an old technique of casting has been used.

The face is typically Javanese, even with a moustache, body ornaments are present and a high jatamakuta with stupa.

Black patina. Age: beginning 20 th century.

16 cm high, 11 cm ø. Price f 350,-
