Brief biography  top

This web page is dedicated to the most important singer in the history of opera, namely the soprano Maria Callas. Her true name was Maria Anna Sophie Cecilia Kalogeropoulos. She was an American of Greek origin (born in New York on December 2nd or 4th 1923 and deceased in Paris on September 16th 1977).

Maria Callas was masterfully capable of “acting” with the voice and managed to portray convincingly the most diverse figures. Thanks to her unequalled achievements in the fifties of the twentieth century, several almost forgotten operas were withdrawn from oblivion. These were mainly operas from the beginning of the nineteenth century, the so-called belcanto-operas. Because of that, these operas nowadays belong to the golden opera repertoire.

Outside the operaworld Maria Callas attracted attention as well. In the sixties of the last century, pictures of her could often be admired in the international gossip papers. That attention even grew when she divorced from her Milanese husband Giovanni Battista Meneghini and she started a relationship with the well-known Greek shipowner Aristoteles Onassis. After the latter had left her for the American president’s widow Jacky Kennedy, things went downhill for her. She gave hardly any performance any more and languished in her apartment in Paris, where she in the end passed away due to an overdose of sleeping tablets.

What remains are her many recordings. For every opera she recorded she established in fact the standard. One could say that the abbreviation BC has in the world of opera another meaning than outside.

Maria Callas' complete opera-recordings (chronological)  top

Underneath follows a chronological survey of all preserved complete opera-recordings with Maria Callas. Most of them are on sale nowadays. The live-recordings are often in technical respect of miserable quality, but qua performance they are usually the most high-spirited. The studio-recordings are all but one (Medea of Luigi Cherubini) issued on the lable EMI.
